Chemistry 31 Handouts

This page contains links to pdf files of a variety of handouts along with answer keys for those that contain problems. Since the major value of extra practice sheets is in the attempt to solve problems, rather than in reading answers, keys will not be linked to problem sheets until after the topic has been discussed in class. It is all too easy to begin a problem, get stuck, look at the answer and tell yourself "Oh, yes, that is what I would have done next." You do not have that option when you take a test, so it is important that you stretch your mind before checking out answers.

You will know that a key has been activated when the phrase Answer Key has changed color and acquired an underline.

Many of the keys use red ink to show the answers. This can wipe out the color ink cartridge on a color printer fairly rapidly. So more recent keys use a variety of colors to show answers, not for emphasis, but to save your color cartridges.

You will need Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® software in order to view and print these documents. It is available via the plug-ins link provided to the left.

Introduction and Measurement

List of Chemical Elements Names to Learn. This is a list of elements with their symbols that you must learn in order to talk chemistry for Chemistry 31.

Practice on Significant Figures. This handout provides practice in counting the number of significant figures in a number and in applying the rules for determining the number of significant figures in an answer. Answer Key

Atomic Theory and Bonding

Worksheet on Atomic Structure. This is a drill sheet on protons, neutrons, electrons, and ions. Answer Key

Worksheet on Bonding. This is a drill sheet on some simple aspects of bonding. Answer Key

Nomenclature

Nomenclature rules. There are seven sheets describing how to name various types of compounds. Each sheet has several examples.

Nomenclature Practice Sheet: This is a general practice sheet for inorganic nomenclature. You must first determine what type of substance it is and which set of rules to apply. Answer Key

Stoichiometry

Practice on Moles, Atoms, and Formulas: This worksheet provides drill in simple stoichiometry problems. Key

More Practice on Moles, Atoms, and Formulas: This worksheet has a greater variety of simple practice problems than the previous one. Key

Worksheet on Percent Composition. We will not cover the material in the last three problems on combustion analysis. Practice in calculating percentage composition, in determining empirical formulas from percentage composition, and in determining molecular formulas. Key

Simple problems involving grams, moles, and equations: Drill in stoichiometry based on balanced chemical equations.

Stoichiometry Boxes. This is a simple conceptual exercise based on a paper from the Journal of Chemical Education. The essence of reaction stoichiometry is addressed in this exercise.

Worksheet: Stoichiometry--One Equation, Seven Different Problems: More drill, adding in problems involving thermochemistry/heat effects. Key

Practice on percent yields and limiting reagent problems: Practice involving more complicated equations and more complicated mathematical considerations. Key
