Biography
I grew up near Santa
Barbara, California in the small town of Carpinteria. After graduating
from high school and going to college, great chemistry teachers in high
school and at California State University, Chico inspired me to study
science and become a teacher. I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree
in chemistry and a minor in mathematics in 1991. I worked for almost
a year as a research assistant in product development for Ortho Diagnostic
Systems helping to develop test kits for medical applications. I then
went to Eugene, Oregon to study Inorganic/Materials Chemistry at the
University of Oregon with Professor
Catherine Page. This research involved layering different organic
and inorganic compounds on silicon in order to achieve specific optical
properties. After obtaining a Ph.D. in 1998, I returned to California
to work as a post-doctoral chemist at UC, San Diego studying luminescent
polymers with Professor
Michael Sailor. I have taught chemistry full-time at Sonoma State
and Chico State Universities and part-time at the University of San
Diego, Ohlone College, and Las Positas College before settling in the
Tri-Valley in 2001. I'm interested in outdoor activities such as hiking,
kayaking, swimming, and gardening.
