Nothing wrong with Company
By Stacey Andrews
Whether you're single, coupled, married or divorced, Company
offers pure enjoyment. The music, dance and drama departments
are putting on this musical a spoof of relationships and
marriage in New York City in the Little Theater here on
campus. Company first opened on Broadway in 1970
and ran for more than 700 performances. Under its original producer
and director, Harold Prince, it received a Tony Award for Best
Musical in 1971.
The LPC production, directed by
Ken Ross, has very few props but a lot of talent. The voices
from each of the 21 cast members fill up the small theater beautifully.
This show is entertaining to the end with comical skits and impressive
choreography, all performed by LPC students.
Opening night saw few jitters, but there were some unexpected
and entertaining slips. After a few technical difficulties
with sound, there came a loud crash as glass and booze
hit the stage floor. The actors handled it so well, however,
it took me a moment to recognize the glitches weren't an intentional
part of the show. The cast had the audience laughing through
it all, and was able to incorporate the accident into later scenes
with witty ad-libbed remarks.
Company will be appearing again Friday, March
31 and Saturday, April 1, at 8 p.m., and again for a final show
on Sunday the 2nd of April, at 2 p.m. I suggest you purchase
your tickets now. They are available at the campus bookstore,
at GoodEnough Books in Livermore, and Runzo's Music World in
Dublin. Prices go from $12 for general admission, $9 for students,
staff, and seniors, and $8 for students with activity cards.
If you won't be able to make it to Company, other
upcoming events this Spring semester include one act plays, dance
productions, a music recital, and jazz and choir concerts, just
to list a few.
After seeing this production of Company you may
feel the desire to do a little song and dance of your own by
becoming a part of a future campus show. All students are welcome
to enhance their vocal, acting, and dance talents through a class
that focuses on training for musical theater performances, Theater/Music
39, offered in the Fall semester.
I recommend everyone take an opportunity to see this performance.
It is exciting to see great talent come in yet another form on
our campus.
