Students pitch in to help refugees

By Christine Morrissey

LPC student Christina Nocerino set a goal for herself two weeks ago. By May 14, Nocerino hopes to raise $1,000 for the refugees of Kosovo

“I want to make a difference in people’s lives,” she said.

Daily from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., she and other volunteers will have a table set up on the Quad, where money donations can be made. Contributions can also be dropped off in Building 700 through out the day.

Donations go directly to the Red Cross, which then benefit the Kosovo refugees. Checks must be made out to the American Red Cross International Response Fund.

“It’s not a political thing,” Nocerino, a chemistry major, stated. “It’s humanitarian aid.”

Nocerino came up with the idea to help fleeing Kosovars over Spring Break. After reading countless news stories about the NATO air strikes in Yugoslavia, she contacted the American Red Cross to see what she could do.

The Red Cross said the best thing she could do is gather contributions in her area. From that, Nocerino contacted Student Services at LPC. Karen Halliday, the Dean of Student Services, happily agreed to let Nocerino fundraise on campus.

This relief project marks the first time Nocerino has taken a leadership role. “No one realizes how much work it takes, “ she said.

But, Nocerino has confidence in herself. “I will make a difference,” she said smiling.
