LPC Geology Program

In Fall 1991, when I was hired, LPC offered the following geology courses:
Geology 10 and 10 lab (6 sections of lecture and 3 sections of lab/year)
Oceanography: Geology 12 and 12lab (3 sections of lecture and 1 section of lab/year)
for a total of 9 Geology lectures and 4 Geology labs/year

Environmental Geology 15
(inserted for a Geo 10 class so that the total number
of Geo lectures would not increase dramatically)

Evening Geo 10 lab (Fall terms)

Oceanography lab added for fall term

Historical Geology 1B
(every other Spring term, eve - intention was to replace the eve Geo class with Hist Geo every other year --

replacing the previous course, not just adding to it -
so that there would not be a dramatic increase in the number of Geo lectures)

Additional Spring Geo 10 and Geo 12 labs

Geology Colloquiums (one per term, topics change each term)

As of Fall 2000, LPC now offers the following geology courses:
Geology 10 and 10 lab (6 sections of lecture and 3 sections of lab/year
- with one of those labs in the evening program)
Oceanography: Geology 12 and 12lab (3 sections of lecture and 3 sections of lab/year)
Environmental Geology 15 (1-2 sections of lecture/year)
Historical Geology 1B (1 section of lecture and lab every other year)
Geology 9 Colloquiums in World Geology, Hawaiian Geology and Paleontology
(one section/term = two sections/semester)
Geology Independent Studies 29 (I have proctored 28 different student Geo 29 courses)
for a total of 11 Geology lectures and 8 Geology labs/year

Future Plans and Possibilites

Mineralogy/Earth Materials (every other Spring term - to alternate with Historical Geology)

this course may not get enough enrollment due to the prerequisites -

but we should try and offer it every other year and see what enrollments we get

Split Environmental Geology into 2 courses:

Env. Geol: Natural and Alternative Resources, Pollution, etc.

Env. Geol: Natural Hazards: Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Floods, etc.

one course in the Fall term and the other in the Spring term

One additional Fall section each of Geo 10 lab and Geo 12 lab -- dependent on student enrollments

Geology 10 Discussion - a 1 unit course, would make this meet the requirements for a transferrable course

Geology 12 Discussion - a 1 unit course, would make this meet the requirements for a transferrable course

Geologic Geography -- a 2 unit course?, would make this meet the requirements for a transferrable course

World Geology - a 3 unit course - would make this meet the requirements for a transferrable course

Community Education Possibilities (I hope that these courses are also available to traditional college students for transferrable credit)

California Geology - 1-3 unit course

Geology of US National Parks - 2-3 unit course

Geology of the SF Bay Area - 1 unit course

Geology of the Tri-Valley Area - 1 unit course

Field Trip Courses -- could include Yosemite, Moaning and California Caverns, Owens Valley, Lassen Area, etc.

Earth Materials - An Introduction to Petrology, Mineralogy and Crystallography
