FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is used to copy and paste files (Pictures, text, videos) on the Internet, from one computer to another. In this lab, you will use FTP to connect to a Microsoft FTP server using an FTP client on your computer. You will then locate and download a file from the Microsoft computer to your computer.

 

  1. Obtain the WS_FTP LE 6.0 utility from www.download.com or from http://download.com.com/3000-2160-10018456.html

 


2. Install WS_FTP by double clicking on WS_FTP32.EXE
and run it

    1. Fill in the boxes as shown below:
    2. Click on the OK button to connect

 

 

 

 

Note the two panes in the window above.

The left pane represents the local system, your computer.

The right pane represents the remote system. In this case, a computer at Microsoft.com.

 

Let’s  navigate in your computer.

In the left pane, double click on the green arrow to go up one level.

Double click again on the left green arrow until you see the root (C:\) of your local system:

 

 

Let’s navigate in the remote system:

Double click on the yellow folder labeled “peropsys”

 


Double click on “GEN_INFO”:

 

Let’s select and download the file ReadMe.txt

Click on “ReadMe1.txt”.

Notice the two buttons with arrows between the two panes.

Click on the arrow pointing left, to your local system.

The file is now copied to your computer on C:

Close the FTP window above and browse to My Computer to locate the file you just downloaded.
