Biology 10: Introduction to the Science of Biology

Catalog Description: Basic principles of biology dealing with the nature of living things, and the nature of scientific investigation and its bioethical impact in our modern world. Designed for non-majors in biology or the biomedical sciences.

Grading Policies:

Your final grade in this course will be based on the scores of your examinations in the lecture/discussion portion (74%) and your performance in the laboratory portion (26%) as follows:

If you have earned 992 points, you are guaranteed an A; 866 points guaranteed a B; 740 points guaranteed a C; 625 points guaranteed a D. All of these totals include the full 100 points for laboratory attendance.

Ground Rules:

Your letter grade for each item will be indicated when it is returned. Four hour examinations in lecture will be given. If you take all four exams, your lowest score will be dropped. If you miss an exam, that is your lowest score. No make-up examinations will be given.

Six laboratory quizzes will be given. If you take all of the quizzes, your lowest score will be dropped. If you are late to class, you may miss the quiz. If you miss a quiz, that is your lowest score. No make-up quizzes will be given. Points are deducted for late laboratory reports. Reports are not accepted at all, if they are so late that they have been returned to the rest of the class.

Unannounced short quizzes will be given in lecture. There will be no make-ups for any reason if you are not present or are late.

If you anticipate missing the final examination, please inform the instructor in advance. If you are ill and miss the final examination, you must contact the instructor that day (925-373-5859) and leave a phone number and a time when you can be reached. Failure to attend the final examination may result in an "F" grade, if arrangements are not made that day or before. Twenty points will be subtracted from your total unless you can document you were under the care of a physician.

You should inform the instructor in advance if you know you will miss a lab, you may be able to do it with the other section. Missed laboratories may not be made up unless you provide a note from your physician. You receive 100 points for attending all of the laboratories. If you miss the lab or leave the lab early, ten points will be deducted. Arriving late for the lab will result in a deduction of 2 points. In general, attendance is taken during the last 20 minutes of the lab.

Several of the experiments in this class will require laboratory work at unscheduled times. You should NOT expect all of the experiments to be finished in the three-hour laboratory period and to adjust your schedule accordingly. This is typical of the real world of scientific research.

If you are absent for a total of four consecutive or six cumulative instructional hours and/or two consecutive weeks, you may be dropped from the class unless you have explained your absences to the instructor. If you decide not to continue in the class, please contact Admissions and Records to drop it yourself. Do not assume that the instructor will drop your for not attending the class. It is important to recognize that the instructor cannot drop you after the "W" deadline.

If your behavior is disruptive or immature, you will be asked to leave the class and to see the instructor before returning. If you are caught cheating (copying the lab report or data of another student, copying test or quiz answers, copying answers to questions in lab reports, copying material out of books, not citing sources of information), a report will be submitted to the Vice President of Student Services for investigation and disciplinary action.
